Duck hunter Dean Rundell eyes the sky at Lake Connewarre near Geelong, Victoria on March 19, 2018 to decide whether a passing mob of birds are ducks, which he can legally shoot, or another protected species.
"Some people think we're just bogans with guns. Some think we aren't compassionate or sympathetic people. Others think we are just feral and shoot anything we see."
At 28, Rundell represents a new generation of hunters who are coming to the pastime as adults, rather than growing up shooting. Recreational duck hunting has been outlawed in three Australian states but in Victoria it's still legal, if vocally opposed on the grounds that no matter how responsible the hunter, shotgun spray can't help but wound but not kill birds which then fly off and suffer.
Aerial surveys of waterbird abundance across eastern parts of the country have found no discernible rebound in duck populations since the bans in Queensland and New South Wales but, rather, a long-term decline. Ecologists say habitat loss, not hunting, is the main driver.
